Short answer: no.

Longer answer: it depends on your field, but probably still no.

When Degrees Matter (And When They Don’t)

If you’re a researcher applying through the Royal Society or British Academy, your PhD matters. Not because it’s a requirement – it’s not. But because academic research roles almost always involve doctoral work. You’d be competing with other researchers who have them.

But for tech? Arts? Engineering in industry? Your actual work is what counts.

I’ve worked with self-taught software engineers who never finished university. Product designers without formal training. Entrepreneurs who dropped out of their master’s programs. What mattered was what they’d built and achieved, not the letters after their names.

What Replaces Academic Credentials

The endorsing bodies want to see impact and recognition. That can come from:

  • Products you’ve built that people actually use
  • Open-source projects with real communities
  • Technical writing that gets cited or shared widely
  • Speaking at conferences
  • Leadership roles at companies doing interesting work
  • Patents or innovations
  • Commercial success

One client had a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field but had built a SaaS product with 50,000 users and ยฃ2M annual revenue. That was more than enough.

Another had no degree at all but was a well-known contributor to a major open-source project, with speaking invitations from tech conferences across Europe.

The Exception

If you’re early in your career – say, three years out of university, and applying under Exceptional Promise, having a strong master’s or PhD can help. Not because it’s required, but because it signals potential when you don’t yet have a decade of achievements to point to.

But even then, we’ve had clients with just bachelor’s degrees succeed by showing innovative projects, publications, or clear leadership trajectories.

What Actually Matters

The endorsing bodies are trying to identify talented people who will contribute to the UK. They don’t care how you got talented. Show them what you’ve done, who recognizes your work, and why it matters.

That’s the whole game.
